Page contents: Brooke with her cavoodle, Cobar up front Making rest a priority As a woman in the public eye, Brooke is used to people’s judgement, and has opened herself up to the most intense scrutiny through reality TV, including her starring role in The Bachelorette. Bachelorette. At this stage, however, she says, “I’m a bit bored playing myself.” This partly inspired her new foray into acting, which she had never really considered in the past. But when she was approached to work on a horror film she decided to set aside her self-confessed imposter syndrome and take on the role as a personal challenge. She auditioned for acting school and has since taken time away from work commitments to hone her skills and do her character “justice”. So, is this a path Brooke hopes to continue? “Acting is definitely going to be a new pursuit for me,” she says. Brooke Brooke Blurton knows her looks different at different points in her life. Sometimes it’s about allowing time to rest, while other times are about embracing routine and structure. “It’s a tool in helping me maintain my mental health,” she says. Her cavoodle, Cobar, is the quiet hero of her routine. “He was very much an irrational, spontaneous decision. I got him during the peak of the pandemic and he’s been the best companion ever.” The pair take daily walks come rain, hail or shine and, equally, chill out together on the couch when downtime is required. The self-proclaimed “project queen” keeps a packed schedule: she co-hosts podcast First Things First, with her friend and First Nations presenter and podcaster Matty Mills, and is also a youth worker, an author, an ambassador for Swisse and L’Oréal and, now, an actor. Brooke says she has learned to take a conscious, proactive approach to stay on top of her mental and physical health. Her “maintenance plan” includes a longstanding therapy appointment every week, and she tries to incorporate movement into her day whether it’s walking 10,000 steps, hitting the gym for a weights session or going for a run. “I don’t feel good when I’m not moving,” she says. While Brooke likes connecting with her audience on the podcast and social media, she admits it’s vulnerable to be open about your life in public spaces and it can take a toll. “Through Instagram I’ve had to really put on this curated version of myself because of the fear of being discriminated against or being cancelled,” she says. “Sometimes I need to stay in and not do anything. Just drink tea or movies because I need to recover.” Brooke now prioritises the things that help rejuvenate her, and give her body the time it needs to recuperate. For one, she is all about maintaining good sleep hygiene. From ensuring her phone’s ‘do not disturb’ setting is turned on at 8pm (“my friends get angry with me they have to call me three times to reach me”) and taking her Swisse Ultiboost Saffron + Sleep Drops to wearing blue light glasses if she needs to look at her phone, Brooke says quality shuteye is crucial. “My mood is so affected by my sleep… I really do struggle. I'm not as vibrant.” She also schedules in what she calls her ‘rot’ days as a counterbalance to her busy schedule. “Sometimes I need to stay in and not do anything. Just drink tea or binge-watch movies because I need to recover.” One thing that has been cathartic for Brooke is writing. “[Good] mental health, it’s about finding your outlet,” she says. “I love writing and it helps me every single day.” This love has led to her second book, teen fiction novel A Good Kind of Trouble, Trouble, which she co-wrote with Indigenous writer Melanie Saward. Brooke says it’s inspired by her experiences as a youth worker and also “footy and queer love and romance”. While excited, she admits she’s “sitting in that fearful stage of whether people will love it or hate it”.

Page contents: Hot tip: Approaching her thirties, Brooke has added eye cream to her skincare routine. “My under-eye area wasn’t something I used to pay much attention to, but now I do use it, it makes a difference.” Skincare staples that work For makeup, Brooke likes to keep things simple. “I’m a sunscreen, BB cream (beauty balm or blemish balm) and lightweight foundation gal. I like blush and lip tint because that makes me feel elevated, but still natural.” Having spent a considerable amount of time in a makeup chair over the years, Brooke has learned that her eyes are the feature she enjoys playing up the most. “For me, eyes are the windows to the soul,” she says. “I think that’s the main thing with beauty it’s just about finding what works for you and what makes you feel good.” ? While variety is important for her career, Brooke is more of a creature of habit when it comes to beauty. “Skin is my focus,” she says. “If my skin is doing well and I can wear no makeup, that is a beauty booster.” Brooke says she tends to change up her routine with the seasons, embracing richer skincare products in autumn and winter. But the constants are always vitamin C and a good sunscreen and never going to bed with makeup still on. “Eating well and drinking lots of water” also keep her skin happy.

Practice good hygiene We’ve all been more aware of hygiene since the pandemic, but Priceline Pharmacist Andrew Wilson says we need to stay vigilant with these good habits. “We noticed a huge upturn in cases of cold and flu around the community in the past 12 months and that was mainly because people stopped wearing masks,” he says. “If you go to places of high volume, like airports, where you’ve got a chance of contracting a viral disease, wearing a mask is still advisable.” Priceline Pharmacist Mariam Farid says don’t forget the other basics either: “Always practise good personal hygiene, like washing your hands with soap and water or using hand sanitiser regularly, particularly before and after [preparing and eating] food.” Staying up to date with your vaccinations is essential for your wellbeing. “The flu vaccine can reduce the likelihood of getting the flu by around 50-60 per cent in young children and healthy adults under 65*,” Mariam says. “It can also reduce the risk of serious complications from the flu, including hospitalisation and death.” Andrew says autumn is a good time to have the flu vaccine. “If you have the vaccine in April or May, you’ll have reasonable cover until October and November.” 1. Cold ? ? ? ? Flu ? ? ? ? ? Symptom Runny nose and congestion Sneezing Sore throat Cough Fever Headache Body aches and pains Both are viral respiratory illnesses but are caused by different viruses. Here’s a general guide to some of the different symptoms. Always talk to your GP if symptoms persist. Stock up your medicine medicine cabinet A well-stocked medicine cabinet is helpful when you catch a dreaded lurgy. Priceline Pharmacy has a range of products that can relieve your symptoms, such as cold and flu tablets and cough drops. “Talk to your pharmacist, who will ask a few questions to work out what’s the best solution for you,” Andrew says. ? Keep active and prioritise sleep No surprises here: the fitter you are, the easier it is to fight off a cold. “It’s important to be fit and healthy to have a good immune system,” Andrew says. Getting good quality (and quantity) sleep will also set you up for success. For most people, that means seven to nine hours each nightˆ and going to bed at a reasonable time. “Avoid things that will stimulate you at the end of the day, like alcohol or caffeine,” Andrew says.

Page contents: One in three Australians are deficient in magnesium*. “This mineral is essential for heart health, bone mineralisation and general health and wellbeing,” Andrew says. “It can also help with cramps, aching muscles and sleep issues.” Magnesium supplements are a great option and magnesium bath salts can help with sore muscles, he says. Protein affects muscle growth, mood regulation, appetite and blood sugar regulation. Studies show that a protein-rich breakfast increases satiety and concentrationˆ. “If you’re struggling to get enough protein in your diet, adding a protein powder to a morning smoothie or yoghurt can be a great option,” Mariam says. Physical activity can wane during winter, but this can have negative effects on your health and wellbeing. “Regular exercise is great for stress levels, your mental health and promoting sleep,” says Priceline Pharmacist Mariam Farid. “Swimming is great for boosting circulation, which will help maintain your body temperature over winter, too.” “Heat packs are great for anyone with chronic pain,” Mariam says. “In the cold months, they can also help ease stiff joints for arthritis sufferers. Keeping a small heat pack in your coat pocket can be useful to prevent stiffness in hands and fingers.” Vaccinations are an essential part of keeping you fighting fit. fit. “Everyone should have a flu jab each year,” Andrew says. “The active ingredients in the vaccine are different every year to help fight the specific strain of flu that’s around. You could also consider having the COVID vaccine.” We all know the risks of smoking, so quitting is a clear way to improve your health. “It will reduce your heart rate and blood pressure, as well cut your risk of heart disease in half, not to mention make your skin brighter and give you fewer lines around your mouth,” Andrew says. “Talk to a Priceline Pharmacist about methods to help you quit.”

Page contents: Vitamin C supplements have long been used to help boost the body’s immune system. “Look for a combined supplement that contains echinacea and zinc, as well as vitamin C,” Andrew says. “Being overweight increases your risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes,” Andrew says. Priceline’s SiSU Health Station can determine whether your weight is in the healthy range. Pharmacists can then suggest weight management tools, if needed, such as supplements and meal replacement formulas, he adds. Get outside. Vitamin D helps support immunity, boost bone health and reduce the risk of depression. “Getting some sunshine during winter is essential to maintain your vitamin D levels,” Andrew says. “Supplements can also be a good option if you need a boost.” Most come in standard (1000IU) doses, or speak to your pharmacist about other options. Hugging is good for your health. Cuddling, or getting a massage all release the “love hormone” oxytocin, which has been shown to decrease stress levels and improve mood. Cosying up with a hot chocolate and a good movie on a cold evening is one of life’s simple pleasures. “Make your feel-good night work even harder by choosing a hot chocolate that helps promote sleep,” suggests Mariam. It lowers your core temperature, which in turn helps your circadian rhythm think it’s time for bed. “During the winter, a nourishing bath oil will hydrate your skin and replenish moisture from cold weather, so you’re getting a double whammy,” Mariam says. Collagen supplements can help with dull winter skin and help bring back some of your summer glow. Studies* show that oral collagen can improve skin hydration and elasticity. “You can either take it in tablet form or as a powder mixed into a drink,” Mariam says. If you’re escaping to warmer climates, don’t forget to pack your travel health essentials from sun protection and insect repellant to anti-nausea tablets. “Take a few little hand sanitisers and use disinfectant wipes, too. Prevention is better than cure,” Andrew says. We’re less likely to socialise in winter but hibernation isn’t always the best for us. “Socialising has been shown to improve mood and reduce stress,” Mariam says. “If you don’t want to go out, hang out with friends at home. It’s good for your health!” ? The cooler months can exacerbate respiratory issues such as asthma and allergies. “Using a humidifier in your bedroom can really help,” Mariam says. Don’t be afraid to ask a pharmacist for advice, whether for help with a problem or prevention. “You can just wander into a Priceline Pharmacy and if a pharmacist is free, they’re there to help,” Andrew says. Everybody’s heard of ‘The Change’, yet perimenopause is only just starting to garner attention. ‘Peri’ is the lead-up to menopause and usually begins in a woman’s 40s. Marked by fluctuating levels of the female hormones, progesterone and oestrogen, it can bring on wildly irregular periods and a laundry list of symptoms including hot flushes, poor sleep, fatigue, headaches, vaginal dryness, anxiousness and ‘brain fog’*. Dr Fatima Khan, a perimenopause and menopause specialist, says symptoms can last for years and should be treated. “There’s no medal at the end of perimenopause. Some women get associated palpitations or a racing heart.” Ease the symptoms: Wear breathable clothing, lower your room temperature, focus on good sleep hygiene and reduce stress where possible, Dr Khan says. “Regulating your nervous system can really help,” she explains. “Some people find meditation, yoga and breathwork helpful during perimenopause for reducing stress”. health

How can I fix it? If you or your partner are struggling to get or maintain an erection, you’re not alone. Most men aged over 45 will experience erectile dysfunction (ED) at some point, and there’s a host of potential causes. The culprit could be physical (such as diabetes, obesity, heart disease), psychological (stress, relationship difficulties, anxiety) or as a side effect of medications, such as those taken for high blood pressure, cholesterol or depression. ED could be also caused by a combo of any of these factorsˆ. “There are many treatments available, from talking to a therapist to taking medication or even using implants and hormone replacements,” Andrew says. “Also, consider exercising more and quitting smoking.” Chat to your pharmacist, but if the ED is ongoing, they may refer you to a doctor as it could indicate that further investigation is needed. Our Pharmacists are there to help you take control of your health, plus Priceline offers private areas and consultation rooms so you can ask to move your conversation there. So, if you’ve been dreading a trip to the pharmacy to resolve any niggling health issues, rest assured that most problems can be sorted quickly and easily. In the meantime, we canvassed the experts for answers to 10 common questions people often feel uncomfortable asking about. I sweat like a racehorse. How can I stop it? Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) is the pits. “People with hyperhidrosis might perspire four times more than normal,” Andrew says. He recommends using a good antiperspirant deodorant and antibacterial soap, to control body odour, and wearing breathable natural fibres, such as cotton. If excessive sweating is affecting your quality of life, talk to your doctor about medicines to control it. Priceline Pharmacist Mariam Farid adds that body odour could also be related to diet, with studies† showing red meat could increase BO, while fruit and vegies smell sweeter. Help! I think I have haemorrhoids. What can I do? Sometimes referred to as ‘piles’, haemorrhoids are lumps found inside or around the anus. Signs of the pesky protrusions include bright red blood on the toilet paper after you’ve done a poo, as well as itchiness, discomfort and lumps you can feel or see. “Haemorrhoids are usually diagnosed by a doctor, and they can be painful,” Priceline Pharmacist Andrew Wilson says. “Thankfully, they’re usually treated with over-the-counter products, such as Proctosedyl ointments or suppositories, depending on the depth of the problem.” If your haemorrhoids are severe, your doctor might suggest other interventions, like infrared treatment, rubber-band ligation (banding around the haemorrhoid to cut off blood supply) or even surgery. Haemorrhoids are often caused by constipation, so upping your fibre intake and drinking more water might help prevent them in the future*.

Foods like onion, garlic and cauliflower might also induce funky breath, but this is short-lived. “Less common causes are kidney issues, metabolic disorders and some types of cancers,” she says. “However, these account for only a very small percentage of halitosis cases.” Phew. Andrew advises brushing twice a day with a good fluoride toothpaste. “Pay attention to your gums and tongue,” he says. “Priceline also has a wide range of mouthwash and tongue scrapers.” If your breath smells like sulphur (rotten egg gas), see your GP as it could require investigating. Normal vaginal discharge is there to help, keeping bugs at bay. But if you notice a change, such as thick and white discharge (akin to cottage cheese), a fishy smell or a green or yellow colour, talk to your doctor or pharmacist, pronto. Unusual vaginal discharge could be a sign of a yeast infection, an overgrowth of ‘bad’ bacteria or a sexually transmitted infection (STI). “Discuss it with your pharmacist, who can treat you appropriately with tablets or antifungal creams and pessaries. Or they might refer you to a GP, if appropriate,” Andrew says. My kid gave me head lice! How can I get rid of them (for good)? Consult your local pharmacist, who can recommend synthetic or natural lice- and nit-removal products. (Lice refers to the bug, while ‘nits’ describes their eggs.) “Once the treatment has been applied, spend time physically removing the little critters with a fine-tooth metal comb,” Andrew says. says. The treatment product should deactivate deactivate or ‘stun’ the lice temporarily, which makes them easier to comb out. Thankfully, research suggests that hats, linen, clothes and, presumably, stuffed animals, don’t harbour or transfer lice or nits. They dehydrate and die once evicted from a human head. So, there’s no need to wash everything (you’re welcome!). ? How can I prevent a constant earwax build-up? How can I treat it? If there were were medals for embarrassing health problems, ‘pruritus ani’ would get the gold. “An itchy anus could be caused by haemorrhoids [see page 29], 29], dermatitis or a fungus,” says Andrew, who recommends seeing your GP for a diagnosis. Other culprits can include an STI, overcleaning, food intolerances, anal fissures and skin conditions such as eczema. Vegan Vegan When it comes to wellbeing products, the term ‘vegan’ means free from any animal or animal-derived products, such as honey, lanolin, gelatin and collagen. Cruelty-free “Look for the cruelty-free bunny logo on the packaging,” Joshua says. These products have not been tested on animals. No SLS and no sulfates Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is often found in body wash, cleansers, and shampoo to help them lather. “Sulfate is a foaming agent,” Xanthe says. “For people with a dry or sensitive scalp it can strip the natural oils from your hair, making it a bit dry and flaky.” And if you get a keratin straightening treatment or colour your hair, using a shampoo will prolong the life of both. No parabens “Parabens are preservatives and keep products shelf stable,” Xanthe says, noting that products without them will need to be used faster. “Always check the shelf life of paraben-free products and, when you’re using them if there’s a slight discoloration or smell, or the consistency is wrong, discontinue use.” ? Most pads come in a multipack, so you can pop one in the washing basket and then use your others so you always have them on rotation.” Refillables and reusables An easy way to approach being more conscious about consumption is by choosing products you can top up or reuse, such as cleansers and body wash, and washable makeup pads. “In skincare, there are so many brands that are doing refillables, whether it’s Neutrogena or La Roche-Posay,” Joshua says. “You can see the trend is definitely growing, which is really good as these products contain less plastic and are often better on the consumer’s pocket, too.” Refillable deodorant is now also popular. Wild Deodorant is a stick formulation that can be topped up again and again. “It’s a wax cream in a stick,” Xanthe says. “Once you’ve finished, you just get the new insert and put it in. The insert comes in a cardboard cartridge as well, which is recyclable.” Alternative period care Australia’s period care market is expected to be valued at $1.028 billion* by 2030 and the fastest-growing segment is period underwear. “Women are becoming more health conscious when it comes to period care and they’re thinking about the products they’re putting [on and] in their bodies,” Xanthe says, citing the cost savings of products like period underwear and menstrual cups as another incentive. “A menstrual cup will last you years versus having to buy disposable feminine hygiene products every month.”

Also known as slow-wave sleep, it helps your brain process and remember new information, and restore connections between brain cells that become overwhelmed during your waking hours (thanks, smartphone). It regulates your internal body clock so you naturally feel sleepy at bedtime. However, vigorous exercise, such as running, is better to do earlier in the day. “Exercise produces endorphins which can prevent you from nodding off,” Andrew says. If you want to move before bed, try a yoga routine. Ask a pharmacist Conditions such as sleep apnoea and restless leg syndrome can affect the quality of your sleep. Speaking to a pharmacist can help you find answers. “At Priceline [selected stores only] we can arrange sleep apnoea tests, which can be done at home rather than through a clinic,” Andrew says. “Some prescription and over-the-counter medicines can affect your sleep. Always speak to your doctor or pharmacist about this rather than stopping taking medication on your own.” Keep your latte to the AM The Sleep Foundation recommends not consuming caffeine for a minimum of eight hours before bedtime to avoid disrupting your sleep patterns. “Switch your afternoon coffee to herbal tea or water,” Mariam says. Stage 1: N1 NREM (Falling Asleep) 1-7 minutes Your heartbeat and breathing slow down, and there are some light changes in brain activity. It can be easy to wake someone during this stage. Stage 2: N2 NREM (Light Sleep) 10-25 minutes Your body temperature drops, and your heartbeat and breathing slow down further. Your muscles relax and brain waves show a new pattern. Stage 3: N3 NREM (Deep or Slow-Wave Sleep) 20-40 minutes Your heart and breathing rate really decrease, and it can be hard to wake someone up. Delta brain waves (also known as slow waves) are present, which are associated with the deepest levels of relaxation and restorative sleep. Stage 4: REM Sleep 10-60 minutes Brain activity picks up again. Your breathing and heart rate increases and eye movements become rapid. Dreams are more vivid in this stage. REM sleep helps with brain development, which is why newborns spend much of their time in this stage. The four stages of the sleep cycle Most people go through four to six cycles of sleep each night. Here’s what happens in each stage and how long it lasts. During the day Add regular stress busters to your routine Research shows that stress can decrease your slow-wave sleepˆ, so monitoring your stress levels at regular intervals throughout the day makes it easier to unwind in the evening. “A lunchtime walk outdoors, talking to a friend and staying hydrated can all help keep stress levels at bay,” says Priceline Pharmacist Mariam Farid.

Garnier SkinActive Pro-Retinol Smoothing Serum Mask, $6.99 What age should I start using retinol? “I’d suggest you start using retinol in your mid-twenties to really prime your skin for anti-ageing,” Joshua says. “It can be used on older skin too.” If you’re looking to treat a problem with your skin, such as acne, Xanthe says you can start using retinol earlier but “it’s always good to get a dermatologist’s advice first”. It’s also advised to avoid retinol and Vitamin A products when you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. What other skincare can I use alongside retinol? “Retinol works beautifully alongside hyaluronic acid, which hydrates your skin and can minimise any dryness or irritation from the retinol,” Joshua says. “The same goes for ceramides, which help prevent moisture loss from dry skin.” Niacinamide can also be paired effectively with retinol, as it “helps strengthen the skin barrier against dryness”. Vitamin C can be used in the same routine, but proceed with care. “It can be too much to use both actives at the same time as it can lead to stinging and irritation. It’s best to use Vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night,” Joshua advises. Always follow with a sunscreen in the morning. Use acids (such as alpha hydroxy acids, glycolic acid, lactic acid and salicylic acids) with care if you are using a retinoid, Xanthe says. Together they may disrupt your skin’s moisture barrier and make it sore or itchy, so always check with your pharmacist first. Retinol Retinol is big news in the beauty world, and for good reason. It has been hailed as a wonder ingredient for your skin due to a huge range of benefits, which include everything from evening out your complexion to reducing the appearance of wrinkles. “Retinol is an amazing product and it’s great to be able to get the results it brings out of a bottle,” Priceline Beauty Advisor Joshua Hank says. “However, you do have to use it carefully. Jumping straight in with the wrong strength or formula can result in skin irritation and sensitivity,” he says. Here’s all you need to know, to help your skin be the best it’s ever been. What does retinol do? Retinol is a powerful derivative of Vitamin A that can help transform your skin from deep down. “Our skin cells turn over naturally and reveal new fresh cells,” Priceline Beauty Advisor Xanthe Panella says. says. “This process slows down as we age, which can result in fine lines, wrinkles, uneven tone and pigmentation. Retinol helps to speed up cell turnover.” When you apply retinol, it travels into the second layer of skin, the dermis. Studies show this allows it to increase the production of collagen*, helping to improve the skin’s appearance. It has also been proven to reduce the appearance of fine lines and pigmentation, reduce pore size and, in stronger formulations, it can help control visible acneˆ.

Page contents: Over-the-counter (OTC) vs retinoids The strongest OTC retinol you can buy is 1 per cent. However, there’s now a product called Differin, which contains a stronger retinoid called Adapalene. “This used to be prescription-only prescription-only prescription-only but can now be purchased with pharmacist approval,” Joshua says. says. “It’s good for mild to moderate acne.” Speak to your pharmacist pharmacist to determine if this is right for you, you, or for more information about higher potency retinoids and if they are suitable for you. Retinol vs retinoids Ever wondered what the difference is? Retinoid is the all-encompassing term for Vitamin A, but there are different types of retinoids with different levels of potency. Retinol is the most readily available form of retinoid available over the counter. It comes in a range of strengths and is a great place to start if you’ve never used the ingredient before. Retinal is the most potent form of Vitamin A available without a prescription and is great for people who are used to retinol or need fast results. The most potent retinoids are only available via prescription from your doctor or dermatologist. Prescription retinoids are used for ageing skin, to treat acne and to help psoriasis. ? How to use retinol safely Start with a low- strength formula As retinol can cause irritation, the safest way to start is by using a product that contains a low percentage. “If you’re a first-time user, opt for a 0.3 or 0.5 per cent product,” Joshua says. “After a few months, you can up the percentage.” Use it at night-time Always apply retinol in the evening, to a clean and dry face, to allow for maximum absorption into the skin. “You only need a pea-sized amount,” Joshua says. “Start off using it two or three times a week, and if your skin is OK, you can increase it to every other night.” Try the ‘sandwich method’ If your skin is particularly sensitive, Joshua advises using the ‘sandwich method’ to test your tolerance. “Use a light moisturiser before applying your retinol, let it absorb, then apply your retinol and then another layer of moisturiser. The moisturiser acts as a buffer against your skin.” Remember it can take a few months to really see the effects of retinol, so stick with it. “You need to be consistent and patient when using it,” Joshua says. The retinol + sunscreen rule Sunscreen is an essential part of any skincare routine, but is an absolute non-negotiable if you’re using retinol. “SPF is your BFF!” says Xanthe. “Because retinol speeds up our skin cell turnover, it reveals baby brand-new skin and it’s extremely important to protect it with SPF 50+.”

The good news is you can adapt this ritual at home without having to buy up a florist. “Essential oils are a really good way to get that luxe experience [in your bath],” Xanthe says. Just add in magnesium salts and a few drops of a floral-based essential oil, such as lavender or geranium. The ritual: Flower baths The ultra-photogenic flower bath is a cleansing and nourishing ritual with roots in ancient Asian cultures. It traditionally involves soaking in a warm bath filled with petals to release the therapeutic effects of flowers. “Flowers have a lot of natural properties, antioxidants and benefits when you apply them in the bath. From gua sha to flower baths, we walk you through beauty practices and ingredients that are still timeless today. 1. Ancient skincare practices

The ritual: Dry body brushing Dry body brushing has its origins in ancient practices such as Ayurveda and TCM. “It originated to stimulate the blood and also to help with circulation as well as exfoliating and softening the skin,” Xanthe says. If you want to try this at home, Xanthe says you can incorporate it into your routine everyday using a body brush. Before showering, on dry skin, start with the brush at your feet, working your way up the body. Be sure to brush in an upwards motion, towards the heart, using medium pressure. The ritual: Hair oiling Originating in India more than 3000 years ago, the Ayurvedic ritual of hair oiling is designed to nourish and moisturise the locks from root to tip. Priceline Beauty Advisor Joshua Hank says this is a great self-care ritual that can be done once a week, before a shower or bed. He suggests using a scalp massager first to invigorate the area, then gently working an oil (such as argan, coconut or jojoba) into the scalp and through the hair. Start with small amounts and allow a few minutes for the oil to absorb, then wash out, Joshua says. The ritual: Gua sha facial massage Using a stone gua sha tool (commonly made from rose quartz, jade or black obsidian) to massage the face has been practised in China for thousands of years. It is believed to help with blood flow, lymphatic drainage and facial tension. To do a gua sha facial massage, Xanthe says to first apply an oil or serum to the face to help the stone glide across the skin. Start from the centre of the face and then gently “scrape” the gua sha outwards towards the earlobes on the cheeks and chin, and towards the temple on the under-eye area. This follows the natural path of lymphatic flow to help de-puff the appearance of the skin.

Ingredient: Honey Ancient Greeks and Egyptians used honey for its healing properties, and Cleopatra was famously said to bathe in milk and honey. “Honey is a natural humectant, which helps lock in moisture and stops water loss,” Xanthe says. “It also helps to exfoliate the skin and helps speed up the skin’s visible healing process.” Honey is also said to have powerful antimicrobial properties and an inhibitive effect on numerous species of bacteria. Ingredient: Clay Civilisations Civilisations in Mesopotamia and Egypt were said to harness the skincare benefits of clay, which Xanthe says can “remove toxins, unclog pores and gently exfoliate the skin”. Face masks are the most common way to embrace clay. She suggests looking for those that include Bentonite clay (derived from volcanic ash), or pink or Kaolinite clay. “A good tip is to mist the skin first with a bit of water as clay can be quite drying,” Xanthe says. Ingredient: Rice water and milk Rice water dates back as far as 794 AD, when women in the Heian period in Japan would bathe their floor-length hair in rice water to keep it healthy. These days using rice water and milk has become a popular beauty trend on social media. “Rice water is said to soothe and nourish the skin. It also aids in [dealing with] hyperpigmentation,” Joshua says. Interestingly, a studyˆ found that rice water reduced the activity of elastase, an enzyme involved in the skin’s ageing process. The research also found that rice contains antioxidants, which fight free radical damage in the cells of the body. Ingredient: Tea Tea has been used as a medicinal herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine for its disease-fighting capabilities†. The most common ingredient used in modern beauty is green tea, which is rich in polyphenols, and is said to help with the appearance of the skin. Products containing green tea are effective in helping to “brighten and visibly rejuvenate the skin” due to its powerful antioxidant properties, Xanthe says. ? Ingredient: Coconut Coconut butter, milk and oil have been used in beauty treatments for thousands of years. These days it has become a popular ingredient in skin and hair care. “It’s calming, soothing and moisturising,” Joshua says. Coconut is also said to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties* and can aid in healing mild wounds. How to make your own rice water It’s created a stir online, so if you want to try it out for yourself, you can make your own rice water for the skin in a few easy steps. Simply rinse ½ cup of uncooked rice in water, then allow it to soak in 2 3 cups of water for 30 minutes. Once the rice is done soaking, strain the water into a clean container and, after use, store any leftovers in the fridge for up to five days. You can wash your face in rice water, use it as a toner after cleansing or even add it into a bath.

Page contents: 1. It’s your best tool for younger-looking skin In Australia, two out of three people will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime*. With 95 per cent of these cases being caused by UV damage, sunscreen is a key player in protecting the health and appearance of your skin. Think of sunscreen as your skin’s coat of armour, shielding it from a high percentage of harmful UV rays, known as UVA and UVB rays. “Sun exposure is the primary cause of premature ageing of the skin, known as photoageing,” Priceline Why SPF should be your BFF 365 days a year. 4 reasons to wear sunscreen in winter Mineral vs chemical sunscreens Priceline Beauty Advisor Xanthe Panella breaks down the difference. difference. Mineral sunscreen “These sit on the skin’s surface and act like a shield to block out UV rays from the sun.” Chemical sunscreen “These feature active ingredients that absorb UV rays before they soak into your skin.” How to choose Think about both the formulation and your skin type. Something thicker is likely to be more hydrating but more prone to clogging (better for dry and mature skin), whereas a lightweight formula is likely less clogging but won’t offer as much moisture (better for oily or acne-prone skin). It’s easy to remember to apply sunscreen before hitting the beach, but even easier to lose the good habit once it’s cloudy and the temp drops during autumn and winter, which is bad news for your skin. Sunscreen is the best way to prevent premature ageing caused by sun exposure, and making it an essential part of your daily skincare routine is crucial for a vibrant and healthy complexion. It’s not just about avoiding wrinkles though: adding SPF to your winter skincare line-up has other benefits too. Here, our experts share what they are.

But while you may have noticed there are a lot of new beauty products spiked with SPF, it’s important to always incorporate a primary SPF 50+ sunscreen into your skincare routine. “SPF in makeup like in a BB cream, a primer or finishing powder with SPF 15 offers an extra layer of protection, but don’t rely on them as your main form of sun protection,” Xanthe says. “There’s insufficient sun protection from makeup SPF alone. The final step in your skincare should always be a standalone sunscreen and then your first step in your makeup is primer.” As for which winter sunscreen to choose this season? Look for formulas that promote hydration and avoid drying ingredients like alcohol. Andrew’s tip is to always look for SPF 50 and check out reputable brands. If you’re not sure where to start, we have five hot recommendations for you below. ? Beauty Advisor Xanthe Panella says. “When UV rays, especially UVA rays, penetrate the skin, they break down collagen and elastin fibres, which are responsible for keeping the skin firm and elastic, leading to wrinkles, fine lines and sagging. Using sunscreen every single day throughout the year can help prevent this.” As well as protecting your skin and its appearance, sunscreen gives your other anti-ageing products a leg-up. “I often have customers coming in wanting to use a retinol or AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) but they don’t want to wear sunscreen. There’s no point in wasting any of your money on these products if you’re not using sunscreen,” Xanthe says. 2. UV rays shine through cloud cover It might be 15ºC and grey out there, but up to 90 per cent of UVA rays can shine through cloud cover, leaving you sun-exposed without even knowing it. That’s why you need to wear sunscreen every day, rain or shine. “Regardless of the weather, there’ll be a UV index that indicates how likely you are to burn on the day. And certainly if the sun comes out, then that intensifies that UV index,” Priceline Pharmacist Andrew Wilson says. (You can find out the UV index by looking at a weather app on your phone.) 3. Cold weather makes your skin more vulnerable to sun damage Just like you need a jacket to protect yourself from the elements, sunscreen helps shield your skin from the harsher winter weather. “In the cooler months, our skin tends to become drier and a little bit more sensitive due to the colder air, indoor heating and the low humidity. This makes your skin even more vulnerable to damage from UV radiation,” Xanthe says. “Daily sunscreen can act as an extra barrier to help protect the skin’s moisture and prevent further irritation or dryness.” Xanthe recommends applying your sunscreen after cleansing and moisturising for an easy three-step skincare routine that will boost your complexion’s radiance throughout the cooler months. 4. Sunscreen now has added skincare benefits We’ve come a long way from the days of smearing a thick body sunscreen that leaves a white film on our faces. Today’s formulas include everything from illuminating to moisturising to mattifying ingredients, ensuring there’s a perfect fit and finish for

Before you start curling your hair, apply a heat-protectant spray onto the hair, Priceline Beauty Advisor Karla Di Fazio says. Then clip your hair up and work in sections from the bottom up. It’s best to curl your hair in sections that are 2.5cm to 5cm wide, says Karla. “This will help you to achieve uniform waves or curls, especially with waves, it’s always an even ‘S’ curl wave,” she says. Take each section and wrap it around the barrel of the curling tong, then hold it in place for 10-20 seconds (longer if your hair doesn’t tend to hold a curl). To finish this look, brush out the waves using a wide-tooth comb then set them with hairspray for extra hold. Your tool kit 6. Remington Coconut Smooth 38mm Curling Tong, $49.95 7. This will add a little grip and texture to your hair. Divide the hair into even sections and wrap each around a roller, facing outwards, from the ends to the roots. Velcro rollers are self-gripping but you can secure them with bobby pins, if needed. Leave curlers in until your hair is dry. “Gently take out the roller in the direction you rolled it then gently comb your fingers through [the curl] or brush out with a comb to give it that bouncy Hollywood look,” Xanthe says. Priceline Bendy Rollers 8 Pack, $9 Tip: the kind of curl you achieve depends on the size of roller or barrel you use. Bigger tools make looser waves and smaller creates a tighter curl. This easy-to-use method is great for beginners, and you can put the rollers in your hair the night before and sleep in them. Karla recommends starting with damp hair and applying a lightweight mousse to help curls hold their structure. For the best result allow the hair to air-dry completely before taking out the rollers. If you’re in a rush, you can use a hair dryer to speed up the process. To use, roll the hair up in the middle of the bendy roller and then fold over each side “like a little circle to lock the hair in,” Xanthe says. When it’s time to take out the rollers, Karla says to do so gently. “Let the wave fall naturally and then brush through again with a wide-tooth comb. Then you can set it in place with hairspray.” “Help, my curls are uneven!” uneven!” How to troubleshoot common curl problems Your curls are dropping This may be due to using too much product in the hair, which can weigh the hair down, Xanthe says. Avoid layering too many products, and only use a small amount to start. “Try using a multi-purpose product like John Frieda PROFiller+ Thickening Spray, which is a heat protectant, volumiser and thickener spray in one,” she says. Your curls are too tight This is often a result of not choosing the right size barrel on your curling iron, Karla says. For a looser curl, choose a bigger barrel. Also be mindful of how you’re wrapping the hair on the curling tong when it’s not spread out enough along the length of the barrel, the curls are tighter. Too much volume “A lot of this is just air built up in the hair,” Xanthe says. “If you use a brush or a comb and run it through the hair this slims it down a bit and takes out the volume.” Adding an oil or a serum can also help to smooth out the hair and take away some of that excess body. Your curls are uneven This can happen when you’re not curling the hair in the same direction, or not keeping hair segments consistent throughout. To help you achieve a more uniform curl, Karla suggests brushing it out as “this helps to even everything out and blend it into a single wave pattern.” ?

Page contents: Total cost $43 1. 2. 2. Hot tip: How to choose the right shade for you “If you have a cool undertone, purples and plums will look really, really good on you. If you have a warm undertone, cranberry or raspberry, and if you’re neutral you can do whatever you want,” Priceline Beauty Advisor Joshua Hank says. To determine your skin tone, check the veins in your wrist. If they’re blue, you most likely have a cool undertone; if they look green, you have a warmer skin tone. 3. 1. All under $25 What you need: 1. KIND Collective Illuminating Primer 30mL, $19. 2. e.l.f Power Grip Dewy Setting Spray 80mL, $24. Try any of these: 1. Natio Tinted Lip Balm SPF 50+ Blushing 15mL, $14.95 2. Revolution Lip Allure Soft Satin Lipstick Lover Nude Berry Boss, $14 3. Milani Fruit Fetish Lip Oil Cherry Lime, $24.99 The trend: Berry lips For an autumnal look that adds a touch of glamour, embrace a cool berry lip colour that helps you look fresh-faced, like you’ve just come in from a cold walk. 1. Use a lip scrub to slough away any dry skin. 2. Apply a lip balm to hydrate and moisturise the lips, prepping them for the application of a lip stain, lip tint or lipstick. 3. Apply the lip colour, making sure to stick to the defined shape of your lips. You could finish your application here or apply a gloss on top for extra shine. The trend: Glass skin Dewy skin is still very much in style. This version takes it up a level to brighten winter skin with a luminous, glossy and ultra-polished complexion, using hydrating skincare and makeup products. How to do it: 1. Skincare is key. Do your entire skincare routine first before applying any makeup and embrace nourishing ingredients in your regimen, like hyaluronic acid, to ensure the skin is thoroughly hydrated. 2. Spritz on a setting spray. This will give your skin a moisture boost, and help your make up to ‘grip’ to your skin, so that it lasts longer. 3. Apply a base product that is also illuminating to your face. Look for primers with illuminator or foundations with highlighter, which provide coverage and brighten. 4. Also dot that product on the high points of the face the brow bone, cheekbones and cupid’s bow to create a radiant glow. Finish the look with a final a spritz of setting spray to lock in your makeup.

Page contents: Total cost $41 2. 1. Hot tip: how to ‘set’ your blush Do you find your blush tends to disappear during the day? No problem! Set a cream blush by using a powder blush on top to make it last throughout the day. The trend: Natural rosy cheeks Channel your inner Sabrina Carpenter with a ‘doll face blush’ that’s all about a cute and playful flushed glow and it takes only minutes to achieve. 1. Using a bronzing brush, apply a cream or liquid blush by tapping it onto the mid-apples of the cheeks up towards the hairline. If you still want more colour, tap on some additional blush until you’re happy with the “flush” you’ve achieved. 2. To finish, using a bronzing brush, apply bronzer to the high points of the face, like the temples, cheekbones and just beneath the cheekbones, to lightly contour. ? What you need: 1. MP Cosmetics Cream To Powder Blush So Chic, $16 2. Milani Baked Bronzer in Dolce, $24.99

Page contents: Share your experience and tag us @pricelineau 1. After Before 4. 3. 2. Hot tip: Apply oil-free concealer to each eyelid, then translucent powder so the eyeliner can grip to it. This adds longevity (my wings even survived a HIIT workout!) Tried & tested… OTHER liquid eyeliners wORTH TRYING 1. The Quick Flick Winged Eyeliner Stamp Intense Black, $39.95 2. Essence Liquid Ink Eyeliner Waterproof Black, $5.50 3. The Quick Flick Travel Eyecons Kit Black, $49 4. NYX Professional Makeup Epic Ink Liner Black, $21.99. I watched the tutorial (via a QR code featured on the packaging) and tried my left eye first. Lining up the stamp to the outer corner of my eye, I traced a line from the inner corner of my eyelid to the outside and joining up to the wing. I needed to draw a slightly thicker line on the outer part of my eye, but this was actually easy with the pen. I repeated this process on the right, but the stamp didn’t have quite the same intensity so I stamped it again (this was a small hiccup and easily fixed). I was gobsmacked by the results. I’d actually managed a winged eye! This was by far the easiest experience I’ve had with eyeliner. So, would I do it again? Consider me addicted. ? Nailing Nailing perfectly winged eyeliner is something I gave up on decades ago. I’ve tried several techniques in the past, including hand-drawing and the ‘sellotape’ trick (ouch) but frankly, it’s too hard. Enter the Quick Flick Travel Eyecons Kit, $49, which promises to be all I need to create the winged eyeliner of my dreams. The kit has a liquid eyeliner pen, an eraser to wipe away any mistakes, and the most important tool: a double-ended pen that features a wing stamp for each eye to achieve that iconic flick. Creator of The Quick Flick, Iris Smit, had all the same frustrations and decided to create “a simple, clean and stress-free solution to nailing your eyeliner, every time”. The Quick Flick eyeliner stamp Does the product that promises to deliver the perfect ‘cat eye’ winged liner work? Beauty journalist Tania Gomez puts it to the test.

My morning morning morning morning morning routine I love Fridays. I look forward to them from the moment I open my eyes. It’s one of the days I pick my granddaughter up from pre-school for a swim and dinner at our house. My days vary so widely. Today I’m making a huge batch of chutney and bottling it. Yesterday I went to Newcastle for a speaking engagement. Tomorrow I’m setting up a gift stall and book signing. There’s no typical day! My morning skincare routine is pretty simple. I don’t do too much; just drink plenty of water, moisturise if I’m really dehydrated, and I will apply sunscreen if it’s going to be a day where I’m outdoors. Every morning I take a handful of vitamin supplements. Stuff for my brain, my joints and my gut. It’s just a safety net in case I don’t get all the right dietaries in for the day. ? The very first thing I do every day is Wordle. I am a morning person. I never used to be until I did four years of breakfast radio, which got me into an early morning routine. I like waking up with enough time to set myself up for the day ahead. My morning routine varies depending on what the day holds, but if I’m not heading off early to the beach for a swim, I like to have coffee in bed. My go-to breakfast is a tie between two options. My husband, Mick, makes sourdough each week, so while there’s some in the house I have that with coffee. Other days it’s yoghurt with muesli and fruit. If someone made me breakfast I’d want eggs Benny. I love it and I’d get that if I’m out at a cafe.
