Page contents: 4. 1. 2. 3. “It comes from a good place because you want to make it amazing,” adds Maha. “I just feel like sometimes that means you miss out on what’s actually happening on the day. Because it’s a special time you remember the feelings, laughing, conversation and joy as opposed to what the turkey was stuffed with.” “I take a moment to do something for me, which has enormous benefits, both physically and mentally” Maha Corbett, Swiish co-founder Maha’s festive faves “Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara is amazing and Lanolips Tinted Balm keeps my lips really hydrated and has a nice glossy sheen. I also like the Thin Lizzy Body Perfector Cover & Glow Makeup. With a little bit of shimmer, it’s a beautiful product for skin. And Batiste Dry Shampoo is a must if I haven’t had time to wash my hair!” anything I can do in advance, I will try to do.” For Maha, that starts with the shopping. “I’ll try to do it all by the end of the first week [of December],” she says. “What I’ve learnt over the years is to also do the wrapping then as well.” The pair are also pragmatic about yielding to the pressure of Christmas food perfection. “People will put a meal on the table most nights of the week, yet somehow the thought of the Christmas one comes with so much more of a burden,” says Sally. 1. Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara Washable Black, $25.99. 2. Lanolips Tinted Balm SPF 30 Rhubarb, $14.99. 3. Thin Lizzy Body Perfector Cover & Glow Makeup 100mL, $79.99. 4. Batiste Original Dry Shampoo 200mL, $13.70. As As a self-confessed great sleeper, only a catastrophe could startle Sally Obermeder awake from the depths of a deep slumber. The cause? Something many modern-day parents would find entirely relatable during December: forgetting to move the Elf on the Shelf. “Plenty of times I’ve jolted awake at 3am and then [realised] my husband’s moved it,” she says with a laugh. “You run out of steam, though. I find I start strong, but by day seven I’m like, ‘Oh no, this thing is still going!’” Elves aside, Sally and her sister Maha Corbett, co-founders of wellness and beauty brand Swiish, share a love of organisation when it comes to Christmas. And it’s little wonder. With a successful business that produces health supplements, skincare and online wellbeing programs, plus four kids between them, the siblings have found meticulous planning is the best way to avoid feeling burnt out by the time Christmas Day arrives. Here, they share some of the ways they keep the festive fun going throughout December and the stress to a minimum. It all starts with a plan According to the sisters, keeping things simple and staying organised are critical components for a stress-free Christmas. “I’m a big list maker,” says Sally. “I make lists and work my way through them very methodically. And

Sally’s festive faves “For a quick party hairstyle, I pull my hair back into a tight ponytail or bun and use the Slick Stick [to tame flyaways]. I love NYX Professional Makeup Matte Finish Setting Spray, because once you’ve done your face, makeup doesn’t move. I also love The Quick Flick Perfect Wings Eyeliner Stamp and Maybelline Superstay 24H Skin Tint.” 1. SLICKHAIR Slick Stick Anti-Flyaway Hair Wand 10mL, $24.99. 2. Maybelline Superstay 24H Skin Tint 30mL, $37.99. 3. NYX Professional Makeup Matte Finish Setting Spray 60mL, $17.99. 4. The Quick Flick Eyeliner Stamp To The Point Black, $39.95. Maha adds that sticking to routine also helps. “Even though it’s a busy time, I try not to skip any meals, and try to have a breakfast that’s really filling,” she says. “It stops me from getting hangry and launching myself at a buffet!” Everything in moderation then? “We’re not going to say no to dessert,” she laughs. “Have the pavlova!” Rest, relax and recharge The constant pressure to create a magical Christmas spirit can take its toll, so Sally and Maha try not to let self-care fall by the wayside. For starters, they have a tradition of booking themselves in for a sister lunch at the end of the year. “To celebrate the year that was, to just take a moment,” says Maha. Sally also likes to book a spa day with a friend after Christmas. “It’s very restorative, very chill,” she says. Stretching and hot showers feature in the siblings’ evening wind-downs, before they both reach for Swiish Sleep Superfood Powder before bed, which helps improve sleep quality. “It’s incredible to promote a steady state of relaxation,” says Sally. So what’s the most important thing to remember over the holiday season? “The messiness and the mayhem are part of it; it doesn’t have to be perfect,” says Sally, who admits that she’s learnt to surrender to the season and embrace its busyness. And yes, that may include forgetting to move the Elf on the Shelf from time to time… ? Wellbeing wonders Getting through the myriad events that come with this time of year requires serious stamina, so wellness is a priority. Maha makes sure movement is a big part of her day, whether it’s playing with her kids or going for a walk. “I take a moment to do something for me, which has enormous benefits, both physically and mentally,” she says. Of course, she has a secret weapon, too. “I start the day with Swiish Supergreen Superfood Powder I mix mine with the Immunity Superfood Powder because I have kids who like to bring home bugs from daycare.” Sally kickstarts her day with activity, too, such as a coastal walk or a strength-training class at the gym. The Swiish faves in her corner? The Supergreen Superfood Powder mixed with Gut Fibre Cleansing Powder and NRC + Resveratrol supplement, supplement, which Sally says is “incredible for energy”. And, should that be lacking at any point throughout the day, she reaches for Beauty Buzz Adaptogenic Collagen Coffee, which helps improve focus, skin hydration and elasticity. Balance is key Good sleep and nutrition underpin Maha and Sally’s wellness routines, particularly during the silly season when they’re more likely to be indulging. Sally tries to ensure her meals are packed with protein and vegetables to keep her satiated and maintain balance, particularly when she knows she’s off to an event with potentially processed food. “If I know I’ve banked up a really good meal, I find that sort of balance works,” she says.

Fazio. “You can also try using body oil to add extra hydration.” Priceline Beauty Advisor Xanthe Panella recommends switching to using a lightweight moisturiser during summer as thicker blends can feel heavy on the skin. Also, don’t neglect your after-sun routine. “Putting on an aloe vera gel after a day outdoors is really going to cool down the skin and hydrate [it],” says Karla. > There’s There’s nothing quite like a long, hot Aussie summer. While we’re gifted with plenty of glorious days spent soaking up vitamin D, hot days can also go hand in hand with skin problems such as sunburn, sliding makeup and heat rash. Page contents: Hot tip: Don’t ever mix sunscreen into your makeup as this can compromise the efficacy of your sunscreen Always read the label and follow the directions for use. Avène Sunsitive Sunscreen Fluid SPF 50+ 50mL, $35.99. 4. La Roche-Posay Anthelios KA+ Sunscreen SPF50+ 50mL, $46.95. Given Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, coupled with the fact that UV exposure accounts for 80 per cent of the visible signs of ageing on our face, sunscreen is most definitely a non-negotiable. “You could have the most amazing skincare routine, but if you’re not using a sunscreen, you might as well throw all those products in the bin,” says Xanthe. Gone are the days of sticky, heavy formulations with a telltale white cast. Xanthe says you can now find lightweight high-protection sunscreens with added skincare ingredients, such as vitamin E and aloe vera. Additionally, sunscreen now features in everything from serums to primers and makeup, making it even easier to protect your skin from harsh UV rays. Always read the label and follow the directions for use. Sunscreens are only one component of sun protection. Avoid high risk sun exposure. Re-apply frequently and as per directions. 3. 2. 1. Which sun-smart products are worth getting excited about? Xanthe says most makeup products with an SPF will be base formulas. Think foundations, primers, and skin tints. If you really want to streamline your routine, go for multitasking products like the Max Factor Facefinity All Day Flawless 3-in-1 Foundation 30mL, $32.95, which is a primer, concealer and foundation with an in-built sunscreen*. “I always say the more SPF you can get on your face the better!” says Karla. Try: Sun-smart makeup We love: 1. Priceline Face Tinted Sunscreen SPF50+ 75mL, $9. $9. 2. The Quick Flick Quick Screen Glowy Finishing Spray SPF50+ 90mL, $40. 3. Natio Tinted Moisturiser SPF 50+ Light 50mL, $21.95. Makeup has now joined forces with sunscreen, making it easier to achieve the daily protection your skin needs. There are generally two kinds of sun-smart makeup: those designed to act like a primary sunscreen, like a tinted sunscreen, and secondary sunscreens like foundations that contain an SPF. While it’s great to take advantage of the protection your makeup can provide, they often don’t contain high enough SPF, so it’s important to use a primary sunscreen for the right protection. Dermatologists recommend using an SPF50 sunscreen daily to help protect the skin against damaging UV rays. Also, don’t ever mix sunscreen into your makeup (unless it’s designed to do so) as this can compromise the efficacy of your sunscreen. Home tanning + Sun care solutions

It’s never been easier to achieve one with the range on Priceline’s shelves. “Gradual tanner is popular,” says Xanthe. “It’s just something easy you can apply every day to maintain a healthy glow.” With a range of tanning formulations available, from mousses to foams and lotions, it’s easy to find a consistency that works for you. you. Xanthe’s hot tip? Dampen your tan mitt before tanning to make it work more like a blending sponge, easily gliding over skin without ‘catching’ on dry areas. Say goodbye to dry fake tan skin with hydrating products, such as The Quick Flick Quick Glow Gradual Tan Serum Spray 100mL, $29, that contain ingredients like niacinamide to nourish the skin while achieving a golden glow. For an ultra-easy tanning option, Karla says to look out for waters, like Tanologist Self Tan Water 200mL, $24.99. “They’re not too thick [so] they’re not going to clog the pores,” she says. Also increasing in popularity are self-tanning drops for building a gradual tan. Simply add to your makeup or skincare to customise your colour. You can also achieve the same colour blending with bronzing drops but without the commitment to a long-term tan.

Ultimately, however, prevention is better than cure, and the best way to minimise pigmentation is to ensure that you wear an SPF50 or SPF50+ water-resistant sunscreen every day, wear a broad-brimmed hat and seek shade as much as possible. Unfortunately, sunshine and heat can bring out pigmentation or melasma (brown patches of skin that appear most often on the cheeks, forehead, nose and chin), so it’s important to have a game plan on how to tackle it. Karla says there are an array of products that address visible pigmentation, however, she says it’s best to look for a few key ingredients that can really help. “AHAs are key for targeting visible pigmentation that’s glycolic acid and lactic acid. Also niacinamide and a BHA like salicylic acid,” she says. Also, sweat can make your makeup slide off during summer so if you want to avoid this on a warm day, it’s crucial to put in the groundwork to lock it in place. “Dewier products tend to slip and slide a bit more. What is a beauty swap? “A beauty swap refers to a more affordable makeup product that looks and wears the same as a higher-end alternative,” says Priceline Beauty Advisor Xanthe Panella. “Many beauty swaps can perform just as well as, if not better, than the high-end products.” The thrill of finding these swaps is what beauty swap culture is all about. “It’s very popular, and perfect for people who want to indulge in luxury products but can’t afford high-end brands,” says Xanthe. It also provides accessibility to people people at any stage of their makeup journey, from beauty beginners to TikTok influencers. Why beauty swap culture is on the rise Cost of living is one factor, but Xanthe also attributes the boom in beauty swaps to viral social media trends. “Social media and beauty influencers have really opened people’s eyes to making [clever] swaps,” she says. “We’re living in a generation where one person will post a TikTok and the next day that product will be sold out everywhere. I’m finding a lot of customers are coming in with screenshots for a swap they’ve seen someone use, so it’s really taken away the stigma of more affordable products.” Beauty swaps vs fake finds Not every alternative product is a beauty swap. Essano Exper+ise Detox + Exfoliate Balancing Shampoo 600mL, $30 The Ordinary 100% Plant-Derived Squalane 30mL, $17.30. Hyaluronic acid Great for smoothing and taming frizz A popular ingredient in facial serums, hyaluronic acid helps your skin retain moisture. It does the same for hair. “It’s great for smoothing frizzy hair and encouraging shine,” says Xanthe. Squalane Great for adding moisture “Squalane also helps prevent breakage and boosts shine,” says Xanthe. Massage a few drops into your hair, then rinse off in the shower. Niacinamide Great for visbily strengthening hair Niacinamide is a type of vitamin B3. It enhances the appearance and feel of hair by increasing body, suppleness and sheen. It also improves the texture of hair that has been physically or chemically damaged. 3. Rinse with cool water According to Xanthe, this seemingly simple step is crucial when it comes to glossy hair. “Using cool water to rinse your hair helps close the hair cuticle and add shine,” she says, adding that you should always make sure you properly rinse out all product. “Leaving any residue on your hair can weigh it down and make it look dull.” 4. Try a gloss treatment A glycolic gloss product such as L’Oréal Paris Elvive Glycolic Gloss Lamination Treatment 200mL, $29.99, will smooth the hair surface, then close the cuticle for serious shimmer. “These really do help with shine and gloss,” says Priceline Beauty Advisor Karla Di Fazio. 5. Add a heat protectant Many of us rely on hairdryers, curling tongs and straighteners, but these styling tools can cause heat damage, altering your hair’s keratin proteins and making strands dry and brittle. The result? Dull, faded, lacklustre locks. While heat protectants won’t totally protect your hair, ingredients such as hydrolysed wheat protein and silicone can help reduce the damage. They work in tandem to fortify the hair barrier and create a protective coating, which prevents hair from heating up too quickly and becoming damaged. “Spray it on damp hair before styling,” says Karla. 1. Take care of your scalp You wouldn’t think twice about reaching for a body scrub or loofah to exfoliate your arms and legs, but don’t forget about the skin on your head, too. Scalp scrubs can help remove a build-up of hair product, oils, dirt and dead skin cells, and are best used before shampooing. “Caring for your scalp gives your hair follicles a foundation for growth, and scrubs can help nourish and protect the skin,” says Priceline Beauty Advisor Xanthe Panella. A scalp brush is another worthwhile beauty buy. As well as a great way to give yourself a DIY head massage, Xanthe says these brushes can help boost your scalp’s circulation. If you’re in need of some extra nourishment, she also recommends hair oils. “Pop some on the day before you wash your hair, making sure you rub it into your scalp and hair thoroughly.” 2. Look for key haircare ingredients Gone are the days of buying a shampoo and conditioner simply because they smell good. The ‘skinification’ of hair is about using hero skincare ingredients to get healthy, glossy looking locks. In the same way that not all skincare is suitable for everyone, different ingredients in haircare benefit different hair types. Think about your hair type, then look for these key ingredients that may help:

She also advises splitting your hair into four sections before you start drying it divide down the middle first, then split each side in two. “Clip the top sections up and dry from the bottom upwards so the underneath hair stays dry and sleek,” says Xanthe. Using a low-medium heat and high speed, “point the nozzle down the hair shaft. Pull the hair tight while drying it to give it plenty of shine.” “Caring for your scalp gives your hair follicles a foundation for growth” Xanthe Panella, Priceline Beauty Advisor 8. Have a selection of brushes While a nylon brush is great for styling and reducing static, for everyday maintenance, natural bristles are the way to go, says Xanthe. “Boar-bristle brushes help distribute your hair’s natural oils from the root to the tip and can smooth your hair, too,” she explains. 9. Finish with a mist Shine sprays and mists can help give your hair extra sheen after blow-drying. “They bring a real gloss to your hair,” says Karla. “Some of these come in sprays while others come in serum formulas, so you can choose which one suits you. But remember, you don’t need much.” 10. Sleep on silk Help your hair stay sleek and glossy by protecting it in bed. Silk pillowcases reduce friction, which helps prevent frizz and dullness. “It’s a great idea to tie your hair up in a messy bun overnight,” adds Xanthe. “This can prevent it from becoming matted and helps it keep its shine.” You could even double up the effect by using a silk scrunchie to tie up your hair. ? 6. Choose the right tools A high-powered hairdryer provides the air pressure needed to dry hair smoothly. “A targeted nozzle is a must-have,” says Xanthe. “It helps control the airflow and keep hair sleek. Also, look for a hairdryer with multiple heat and speed settings.” When it comes to straighteners and curling irons, check out the ones that make it easier to keep your hair in good condition. I like to just go back to basics,” says Xanthe. “Hold off on using active ingredients for a little bit and just stick to a really good moisturiser, a gentle cleanser and a sunscreen.” Xanthe says using a gentle cleanser, such as Avène Tolerance Extremely Gentle Cleanser 20mL, $26.39, $26.39, is great as it can be used without water, which can cause dry skin. If you do find you need to rinse your face, it’s important to use lukewarm water, and not hot, as it’s gentler on the skin. Use a supportive serum When your skin has settled and you’re ready to introduce a serum, Xanthe says to choose one that specifically supports skin moisture barrier function and helps to reduce any redness and dryness. “I like The Ordinary Soothing Barrier & Support Serum 30mL, $29.10, $29.10, which helps soothe the skin’s moisture barrier,” says Xanthe. “You can use it morning and night as well, and it’s very gentle.” Turn to ceramides If the skin barrier is like a brick wall, ceramides are the “cement” that hold all the bricks (the corneocyte cells in the body) in place. Joshua says this is one of the reasons why ceramides are so popular when it comes to skincare ingredients. “[Ceramides] strengthen the skin moisture barrier and will help with issues like irritation and redness,” says Joshua. As we age, our “cement” tends to diminish, which can cause holes to appear in the brick wall, so using a product with ceramides, such as CeraVe Moisturising Lotion 236mL. $17.99, $17.99, can help to replenish that stock. Page contents: Joshua says depilatory creams are a good choice for hair removal beginners or if shaving irritates. For some, though, there is a risk of an allergic reaction, so make sure you do a patch test first. “Test on your arm 24 hours before, see if irritation occurs. If nothing happens, do a patch test on your face. Sometimes your face is more sensitive than the rest of your body,” says Karla. For the best results, Joshua says the shorter the hair, the better. He recommends leaving the cream on for five minutes, wiping it off and applying it again if you still haven’t got all the hair. Do this no more than twice and make sure you stick to the recommended allotted time on the packaging. Also, be sure to adhere to the part of the body the cream or lotion is designed to be used on. “If it is a body one and it’s not for either delicate areas or the face, do not use it on [that area] because it’s going to be harsher,” says Joshua. ? We wish we could tell you there’s a waxing method that doesn’t require gritted teeth, but the upside is baby smooth legs and underarms that last a lot longer than a shave. The most popular methods for waxing at home are strips like Nair Wax Ready Strips or pot wax like the Waxaway Salon Wax. Karla says the pot wax can target more specific areas, whereas strips tend to be more convenient to use. To get the best result, the length of the hair is crucial. “If the hair is too short, the wax may not adhere properly. If the hair is too long, it can mean less effective removal. Ideally, hair length should be [as long as] a grain of rice,” she says. When it comes time to wax, Karla says to make sure you apply the wax in the direction of the hair growth, then remove it in the opposite direction of growth. Also stretch out the skin before removing the wax strip to minimise irritation and hair breakage. It’s one of the easiest and most common ways to get rid of hair, but a good shave also requires the right tools. There are generally two methods: an electric razor, like the Remington Body & Bikini Kit, or a manual razor. Priceline Beauty Advisor Joshua Hank says manual razors are often the go-to. “[They often have] a shaving gel strip that makes it easier to shave and it doesn’t pull on the skin.” The pre-shave prep you do is important to avoid razor burn, irritation or bumpiness. Karla says to exfoliate first to give your razor a smoother surface to glide across. “Shave in the direction of hair growth. Use a good quality shaving cream and razor, and rinse the razor frequently after use. Follow up with post-shaving care, whether that’s moisturising or using a balm.” At-home IPL has grown in popularity as a way to get rid of hair. IPL stands for intense pulsed light, which involves gentle pulses of light being sent to the root of the hair follicle, which then encourages it to go into a resting phase. After a few rounds, the amount of hair produced decreases and hair growth is permanently reduced. Doing it yourself with a device, such as the Go Bare IPL Handset, requires an initial investment (though will ultimately save you money from salon visits). It also pays to do some prep to make sure you get optimum results. “Firstly, read the device’s instructions carefully,” says Priceline Beauty Advisor Karla Di Fazio. “Then do a patch test on your skin and make sure it’s 24 to 48 hours before to let it settle in and see if you are experiencing any reactions.” beauty Best for beginners: hair removal creams Best for salon-quality results: at-home waxing Best for convenience: next-level shaving Best for long-lasting results: do-it-yourself IPL priceline.com.au

And, if you’re travelling, you can book a 30 minute consultation for travel health advice and recommendations on vaccinations*. ? Treat yourself too If all the running around and broken sleep has you feeling a bit flat, there are simple ways to pep yourself up and get you feeling party ready. “A sheet mask provides instant hydration and can make you look less tired,” says Karla. “A gradual tanner can give you a glow without having to do a full face of makeup, while Wrinkles Schminkles patches can smooth out skin overnight, making you look super fresh.” Take the time to relax While you’re busy making things magical for everyone around you, it can be easy to forget that you’re a key family member and deserve rest and pampering. Page contents: I want to… be consistent with healthy habits Whether your goal is five minutes of morning mindfulness or flossing your teeth more than twice a year, ‘habit stacking’ could be key to cementing daily habits. Pioneered by Stanford University behaviour scientist B.J. Fogg and made popular by Atomic Habits author James Clear, habit stacking involves pairing a new habit with one you already do. For example, you might say, “Before I shower, I will do 12 push-ups,” or “After I put the kettle on, I will text a friend a nice message.” Linking fresh behaviours to established habits makes it more likely that you’ll stick to your new healthy routine. I want to… be more present If your phone scrolling prevents you from being in the moment, engaging with your family or doing focused work, put your mobile in another room. A study by The University of Texas at Austin found that the mere presence of a phone face-down on a desk or even stashed away in a pocket or bag reduced cognitive functioning, even when switched on silent*. When your phone is within sight or reach, say researchers, your brain works hard to not want to pick it up. Out of sight, out of mind! In the new year, the (unrealistic) pressure to shun carbs, take up meal prepping and meditate every morning for the next 52 weeks can feel overwhelming, but hitting refresh on your health shouldn’t be. Instead, it’s small, consistent changes that can make a real and lasting difference to your fitness, headspace and waistline. And after the whirlwind of the festive season, the new year is the perfect time to rethink your routine and focus on your wellbeing. Here’s where to start. Family time is the best way to start the weekend. I’m not a morning person because I love sleeping too much! It’s just so cosy and nice. When I was working at Home & Away, Away, I was up super early getting everything done before work. But when I’m not working, and Jordie is on dad duty, I love a big sleep in. I cannot even tell you the last time that I did a decent workout! It’s been far too long. But chasing after a toddler keeps you busy. I’m definitely looking forward to the day I have the energy to exercise again. Solo time is really important to me to mentally prep for the day ahead. I love writing in a journal. I will sit in my office or go outside in the sunshine and write. ? The very first thing I do every day when I wake up is give my son, Ted, a big cuddle and kiss. I don’t need an alarm these days. A toddler is an amazing alarm set for around 6-6.30am. But my partner Jordie will wake up before both of us and make us breakfast when we wake up, so I can’t really complain. Since becoming a mum, my morning routine has changed so much. Before having my son, I would wake up and drink coffee in silence and enjoy the peacefulness. Then I’d walk my dogs and go to the gym before work. All of that has gone out the window now. But I know Ted will only be this little for a short period of time, so I embrace the changes.
